Playmore of SNK

playmore-of-snk

A recent PlayStation Network sale was ongoing in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the launch of the original Playsation in 1995. As a result of this I purchased five of SNK Playmore’s “minis.” They consist of their early pre-Neo-Geo arcade titles.

I picked up shoot-’em-ups Vanguard (1981), Ikari Warriors and its first sequel, Victory Road (both from 1986), Guerrilla War (1987), and Ikari III: The Rescue (1989).

All of my experience with any of these games was with their ports released onto the NES. Ikari Warriors, Ikari III, and Guerrilla War, mostly. Vanguard wasn’t released at home outside of Atari platforms. I played the game via emulation after seeing it in the SNK episode of G4’s Icons show (season 3; episode 12).

I remember playing Guerrilla War on NES when renting it at the time. We finished it during our first time playing it because it had unlimited continues. I have this version today, but I don’t think I’ve played it since then.

Victory Road Predictions

Victory Road. The pay-per-view that helped TNA start their monthly Sunday tradition from the weekly $10 shows. The last one was in November 2004. It was replaced by Genesis the following year which saw the debut of Christian Cage. Speaking of Cage, he unfortunately didn’t retain the NWA title last month. He’ll have to win two matches in one night to get it back.

Jim Cornette came in and got right to work with some hits and some misses during the last few weeks. One hit was making the Latin American Exchange get back in the ring. A miss was disbanding Team Canada with only one chance for them to stay together as a team. Despite some of my misgivings of Cornette’s decisions, some of the matches look pretty good. Let’s have a look.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship
Jeff Jarrett vs. Sting, Christian Cage, Scott Steiner, or Samoa Joe

It was a bummer to have Jeff Jarrett capture his sixth NWA title last month. But, when I think about it, he really was the most logical choice. That and the fact that Senshi won the X Division title so quickly. All of this more than likely means that Jarrett is simply going to be a transitional champion for Samoa Joe. It looks like TNA is smart enough to know not to put any of their titles on Sting, Scott Steiner, and Kevin Nash. Besides Joe the only other person is Christian Cage. However, if that happens then the whole finish of the main event last month is rendered pointless.

My Choice: Samoa Joe

Hair vs. Hair Match
Raven vs. Larry Zbyszko

Raven’s problems with Larry Zbyszko come to an end this Sunday. This whole thing started back at Genesis. That’s where Raven defeated PJ Polacco (aka Justin Credible). He then beat Chris K. (aka Kanyon) at Turning Point and then lost to Sean Waltman in January at Final Resolution. Raven was reinstated two months ago defeating A1 at Sacrifice. Now it’s time for someone to lose their hair. And since Zbyszko doesn’t have much left I expect him to become the bald one.

My Choice: Raven

On top of those two matches, there are four more making a total of six for the event. Those matches are as follows with the predicted winner in bold.
* Chris Sabin & Jay Lethal vs. Alex Shelley & Kevin Nash
* Team 3D vs. James Gang & Abyss
* NWA World Tag Team Championship – America’s Most Wanted & Gail Kim vs. AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, & Sirelda
* #1 Contenders Match – Sting vs. Christian Cage vs. Scott Steiner vs. Samoa Joe

Update: Four new matches announced for the PPV.
* Rhino vs. Monty Brown
* Latin American Exchange vs. Ron Killings & Sonjay Dutt
* The Naturals vs. The Diamonds In The Rough
* X Division Championship – Senshi vs. ??

Update #2: Apparently TNA decided to take the NWA title match off of the pay-per-view without really saying anything about it. Obviously, this is a really retarded idea. Regardless of this Samoa Joe should still become the next challenger to Jeff Jarrett.
