Now Playing: May-December 2016

In the latter half of 2016 I played a number of games. Doom 3, Max Payne 3, Saints Row IV’s expansion, Infamous 2, Crysis 3, etc. I’m currently on Watch Dogs for the last month and I’ve been enjoying it more than most people did. I’m with Jim Sterling on this game and it’s fun for what it is. I haven’t been expecting more from it. My thoughts on other games are as follows.

I started out playing Doom 3. It was much better than I thought it would be, but it’s still a bit cliche for the gotcha type of horror it went for. However, I did like it and I felt the pace was a small amount faster in the expansions of Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission. Those were a welcome addition.

Then I moved onto Max Payne 3. It was the fun Payne gameplay we’ve come to know just with an updated sense about it that’s needed in today’s gaming scene. The story was the good, but I did feel the game lasted longer than I had liked. It was still worth my time regardless of this complaint.

Next up was Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell. The previous game in the series I played was Saints Row 2. I was going to do the usual play them in order since I have SR3 and IV, but I thought screw it. I went for the out the top hellscape adventure because Usagi704 was playing it and it looked wonderfully fun in all of its ridiculous glory. It was certainly that.

Continuing on with the PlayStation 3 marathon I was on, I played and finished Infamous 2. I had tried to start it 2014, but felt the need to get back to my gaming roots at that time. I was worried I would abandon it again, but thankfully that was never an issue this time around. I played on the evil side the first and only time I plan on playing it. It’s just easier to have fun Infamous’ open world that way. In the end I chose to become what I hunted for the whole time.

Crysis 3 was the last game before Watch Dogs and it was pretty much what I expected. The only problem is that eventually I was placed in, what I felt was, an unfair boss fight. I took my sweet ass time throughout the game and since I was ready to be finished with it, I called it “done” when this fight failed multiple times.

In the future I plan on playing every single game I haven’t played that I received for Xmas. This includes the lot I was given this last holiday too. In total it’ll encompass 19 games starting with Bujingai: The Forsaken City. I won’t force myself to beat a game if I’m not entertained by it. But hopefully it won’t be much of a problem. Wish me luck.

Happy New Year!

Infamous Pinball

My first new games bought of 2015 happened when I was talking with Usagi704 about how one of the PlayStation 4 games I’d like to get would be The Pinball Arcade. He followed up by saying that the game is likely to become harder to find. I didn’t want that to be the case and asked where he bought his copy. He said Toys-R-Us and I noticed they closed in an hour on that night. I immediately headed out and found that they had one copy left. While I was there I also spotted their last copy of Infamous: Second Son and also included that game in my purchase.

As some of you may know I’ve been playing some PS1 titles lately in response to the original PlayStation’s 30th anniversary in early December. I didn’t have PS2 component cables to make those games look better. Once I bought them the television I was using them on wouldn’t always display video. I don’t know exactly why it was happening, but I knew a perfectly working TV that Usagi704 had sitting around would do the trick and it has since I started using it yesterday.

Those are my first gaming purchases of the new year. How about you? Anything new?

UPDATE: As it turns out I remembered incorrectly. Usagi704 actually saw a copy of Tomb Raider: Underworld at Toys-R-Us and not a copy of The Pinball Arcade. In fact, he bought The Pinball Arcade off of Amazon instead.

Best Buys For Non-Wish List

Usagi704 decided it was time to only pick up Game Boy Advance games which are complete and in the box. As I’d shown off last friday, I do have such GBA titles in that very condition! However, I’m personally not against getting a hard-to-find or rare game as cartridge only if that means I’ll finally own it. This brings us to The King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood. This was a game Usagi had in the past and this was his second time purchasing it, but since he wanted a complete copy I opted to buy this one off of him.

This week (or at least this last Sunday for me) I went to Best Buy and selected to purchase Infamous 2, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and God of War Origins Collection. I didn’t have any of these on my wish list even though I did think about getting them before (sans God of War Origins Collection since I already had a used copy). I figured I might as well this time around since they were only $15 each.

Keeping on the topic of games not on my wish list. I found Onimusha 3: Demon Siege for the PlayStation 2 for $6. It’s the only other title in the Onimusha series which interests me outside of the fourth game, Dawn of Dreams (already have). The first two titles are controlled Resident Evil style which didn’t look like it worked very well for the type of action that’s on display. I have to have a dose of Jean Reno. :D
