I also got my first two platinum trophies within the previous 12 months. The first one came along back in March with Burnout Paradise and the second one was captured more recently in November with God of War.

In some interesting trivia about my game collection (idea from DuncanR2N), the oldest game I own is Dodge ‘Em for the Atari 2600. This is an estimate since it’s extremely hard to find more than just the year of 1980 for a release date. GameSpot has it listed for 1978 so it’s obviously not known for sure.

The newest game I own is a lot easier to look up. It would be Pandemic’s final game The Saboteur which was released a month ago.

On my wish list the oldest game that I’m looking to get is the NES version of Konami’s Gradius which was released on December 1, 1986.

The newest game that I’d like to have (mainly because I’m a big fan of beat-’em-up games) is Revenge of the Wounded Dragons on the PSN. It was released 23 years and 9 days after Gradius on December 10, 2009.

Coming up soon I’ll have my Game of the Year announced. Game on!

Street Fighter IV (PS3)
Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3)
Retro Game Challenge (DS)
Super Street Fighter II: Turbo Revival (GBA)
Burnout Paradise (PS3)
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (PS3)
Viking: Battle for Asgard (PS3)
Skyblazer (SNES)
Chili Con Carnage (PSP)

I finished three games this time around: Chili Con Carnage, Streets of Rage 2, and Street Fighter IV. The former is what I can only describe as a lighthearted take on Max Payne, though not literally. There’s a bunch of challenges that are in between the missions, but I just messed around with the first one and then ignored the rest. I beat the middle game via Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection and its save state feature that was carried over from the previous collection. The latter game was beaten to unlock the hidden characters.

Speaking of Street Fighter IV, I’m sure a number of you would like to know what I think of it so far. Obviously it’s great and does live up to the pre-release hype. The only thing that I miss is the rebalanced versions of the characters from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. From what I heard so too is David Sirlin.

I enjoyed my time with Viking: Battle for Asgard despite not playing it for about two weeks. If I remember correctly I think I’ve cleared about half of the second map. I also haven’t really touched Skyblazer that much either. I’ve beaten the third boss in the game.

I put more time in Burnout Paradise. I gave in and purchased the legendary cars pack. If you’re not in the know the pack consists of cars based on the iconic ones from Dukes of Hazard, Ghostbusters, Knight Rider, and Back to the Future. You can check out videos on these rides here.

Now it’s time to name the Game of the Month. I bet you’re thinking it’s going to be Street Fighter IV. You’d be right normally, but this one game is truly unique. I’m talking about Retro Game Challenge (yeah because the header graphic doesn’t give it away). I love this game’s references to the games I grew up playing. It’s also fantastic in how the games presented give you that nostalgic feeling without them being anything that was actually out at the time.

That’s it from me. Until next time!

It’s been awhile since I’ve racked up as many games played in a month’s time. This time it was a total of 14.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SNES)
Skyblazer (SNES)
Resistance 2 (PS3)
Burnout Paradise (PS3)
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (PS2)
Fatal Fury (GEN/SNES)
Prince of Persia (PS3)
Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Volume 1 (PS2)
Chili Con Carnage (PSP)
SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 (PSP)
Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
Castlevania Chronicles (PSN)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3)

The games that I finished are CoD4, GTA IV (again), Fatal Fury (arcade/SNES), and Prince of Persia.

In other games, Castlevania Chronicles is of the older style of that series and, as expected, gives me some trouble. This PS1 game has an original mode and an arranged mode. The latter mode isn’t just a slight graphical upgrade. It’s also much easier. The proof here is that in original mode I can’t get past stage 2 where as in the arranged mode I’ve made it to stage 6.

I’ve definitely played more Fatal Fury over this last month than I think it should be played. On top of beating the arcade version on the PSP several times, I also cheated my way though the SNES version and played quite a bit in vs. mode with Usagi on the Genesis version. He loved using Michael Max against me and I could see why. The dude is totally broken when it comes to his semi-automatic dashing. It comes out as fast as you’re willing to double tap. Cheap! (lol)

More recently I’ve been online with Resistance 2 and my personal 2008 Game of the Year, Burnout Paradise.

I was mostly playing co-op as a medic in Resistance 2 to get my XP up before the patch that came out today. Apparently the medic was able to get XP much quicker then the other two classes before the patch. So I was getting as much as I could beforehand. :D

It was nice to get two more online challenges in Burnout completed. After awhile it becomes difficult to get to ones that haven’t been done.

Grand Theft Auto IV wins for a second time as Game of the Month. Last time it was back in May. The addition of trophies was cool as was reversing all of the decisions from the first play through. Most of those decisions don’t really matter which one you do. However the first one, killing either Playboy X or Dwayne, is much better on one side. The online side of the game is pretty small now with only “griefers” left it seems.

The next game that the fortune cookie of Backloggery.com suggests I play is Jurassic Park on the Sega CD. To that I say “hell no.” :P

New Findings While On The Quest For Grand Theft Auto IV

Yesterday I specifically went out to buy Grand Theft Auto IV. I first checked It’s About Games. They didn’t have it, but I did notice several hard-to-find games that I needed to get because it will probably be awhile before I see them again.

The first stack of games included:
Knight Rider (NES)
Battletoads (NES)
Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) – game only; great
Renegade (NES) – game only; good
Shadow of the Ninja (NES) – game only; fair

After getting home I tested the games out as I always do and I ended up having problems with Knight Rider and Battletoads. So later in the day I returned to the same store to return those two games and picked up four others in their place.

Street Fighter 2010 (NES)
Rad Racer II (NES)
Tecmo Super Bowl (SNES) – game only; poor
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2) – complete; great

Once again the NES games gave me problems. Today I took those back and bought a PSP launch game instead.

Twisted Metal: Head On (PSP) – complete; great

Now I own every single Twisted Metal game that’s currently available.

While I was out the second time the previous day, I stopped by Circuit City to get GTAIV. I found that game along with three more PSP games. An extra DS game that I bought at Best Buy about two weeks ago was Nanostray 2. I wasn’t going to get it, but then I saw that it was $20.

Nanostray 2 (DS) – new
Avatar: The Last Airbender (PSP) – new
Guilty Gear Judgment (PSP) – new
Chili Con Carnage (PSP) – new
Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3) – new
