Video Game Deals

Hi, there folks. I’ve new purchases to speak of and movies I’ve since watched in the last week.

The Hunt for Red October is a thriller of a film with Sean Connery as a defecting Russian sub captain. It’s probably the only time I really liked a Tom Clancy book come to the silver screen. The next, as voted on by my followers via Twitter, was The Deer Hunter. Sadly, I didn’t get more than an hour into this one. It just didn’t hold my attention and, at the length of three hours, I felt it was too long so I moved onto the next vote. This one was Ghost from 1990. Regardless of the main stars on the poster, Whoopi Goldberg’s character interacting with the ghost of Patrick Swayze’s character is played seriously, but ends up fairly goofy. It was hilarious to watch.

The next two films to vote on are Zoolander (2001) and Sicario (2015). You can vote in the comments section below, if you wish.

Onto video game purchases:

A controller I had seen from Capcom was advertised back in the ’90s with the Super Nintendo and Genesis port of Super Street Fighter II. It’s called the Capcom Pad Soldier. Its design is quite odd. After remembering it all these years later, I wanted to try it out so I purchased a used one from eStarland. The buttons are at an odd angle for use of your thumb, though it’s doable. It’s at that angle to suggest the use of your fingers instead. It’s quite the unique experience that I can see using on a SNES, but Sega’s 6-button controller on the Genesis is more than adequate.

Usagi704 on Twitter said:

“I just told @hartknight #Yakuza5 is 40% off and he immediately rushes back where he came from to make the purchase! heh”

This is true and exactly what I did. As soon as he told me about the sale on Yakuza 5 I was like “Oooohhhhhh!,” turned around, and took advantage on said PSN offer.

Also, speaking of offers I took advantage of, I had major discounts available to me at the nearby Meijer. I took them up on a $30 off Assassin’s Creed Syndicate digital coupon, 20% off GM employee coupon, and the regular 10% employee discount. This got me three PlayStation 4 titles: Batman: Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, and the previously mentioned AC game.

I’m sure it won’t be difficult to find co-op buddies for Bloodborne in the future once I’m ready to Game On once again.

Game of the Year 2014 – Worst Game

hart14-worst

For the worst game I played all of last year it’d be too easy to give it to a game which I utterly hated playing. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II is the perfect example of this. I didn’t enjoy that game at all, but anybody who knows me already knows I have rarely if ever enjoyed my time with a Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Two other contenders for worst game are Crime Fighters and Assassin’s Creed III. The former is an old Konami arcade beat-’em-up. It definitely isn’t their best brawler by a long shot. Their two sequels, Vendetta and Violent Storm, are much better. The latter game is the typical Ubisoft glitchfest that we’re very used to seeing these days. It’s not a big shock it isn’t good.

The winner is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. I played this last January and I wasn’t impressed by the simplistic storytelling or the idea that I’m supposed to care for these characters more than I actually do. The attempt to have a heart-warming story was laughable at best. Also the fact this game was developed by Starbreeze Studios is surprising because they’ve worked on better games already. Go back to those titles and leave this pretentious work in the forgotten past.

The Memory Card Battle

memory-card-battle

Recently I started to think about how many PlayStation and PlayStation 2 memory cards my Hart & Usagi Podcast co-host, Usagi704, has and how many in comparison I don’t have. It’s time to rectify that. I’m putting him on notice because I’m going to start hording them too! Ok, not really. :D But, I do feel I need a few more. Because of this I bought a official Sony black PS2 memory card at the local gaming store It’s About Games.

Despite not owning a PlayStation 4 system yet, I’m not against getting games for said system beforehand. Therefore I also picked up a used copy of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It was around $20 and seemed like a good time as any.

Speaking of a good time to pick up some games, there’s a holiday sale currently on the PlayStation Network. On there they have several games at a discount to everybody and, if you’re a PlayStation Plus member, you can possibly get a few more bucks off. On my list to get was a shoot-’em-up that was originally only on the Xbox 360. It came to PSN as Raiden IV: Overkill for $19.99. It was more than I was willing to pay, but the holiday sale took 40% off making it $11.99. If I had been on PS Plus, which I’m not, another 10% would’ve been saved.

Check out the sale and thanks for reading!
